In 2025, an increase in electricity generation was observed at TPPs by 3,273.0 million kWh (+3.7 %), at GTPPs by 1,568.8 million kWh (+13.2 %) and at RES (SPP, WPP, BGU) by 1,083.3 million kWh (+16.9 %).

The renewable energy sources (RES) sector demonstrates sustained growth and is becoming one of the most dynamically developing areas in the electric power industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The volumes of electricity generation at RES facilities increase annually, which is facilitated by the implementation of state programmes and initiatives aimed at the development of “green” energy.

As part of its commitment to international goals for low-carbon development, in May 2013 the Republic of Kazakhstan approved the Concept for the Transition to a “Green Economy”, setting an ambitious goal: by 2050, the share of alternative and renewable energy sources is to reach 50 % in the structure of the country’s energy balance. In accordance with this Concept, as well as with the Strategic Development Plan of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2025, phased target indicators have been determined for the share of RES in the total volume of electricity production:

  • 3 % by 2020,
  • 6 % by 2025,
  • 10 % by 2030,
  • 50 % (including alternative sources and RES) by 2050.

Based on the results of 2025 (according to NDC SO data), 170 RES facilities with a total installed capacity of 3,746.3 MW were operating in the Republic of Kazakhstan:

  • 62 WPP facilities with a capacity of 2,071.0 MW;
  • 51 SPP facilities with a capacity of 1,353.0 MW;
  • 56 HPP facilities with a capacity of 321.2 MW;
  • 1 BioPP facility with a capacity of 1.1 MW.

In 2025, the capacity at 2 RES facilities was increased and 13 new RES facilities with a total capacity of 707.7 MW were commissioned.

Based on the results of 2025, the volume of electricity (according to NDC SO data) generated by RES facilities amounted to 8.65 billion kWh (WPP – 5,400.7 million kWh; SPP – 2,074.6 million kWh; HPP – 1,175.1 million kWh; BioPP – 1.8 million kWh), or 7.0 % of the total volume of electric energy production, which is a 14.5 % increase compared to 2024.

KEGOC JSC carries out its activities exclusively in the area of electricity transmission. According to the EU taxonomy, the transmission and distribution of electricity may be classified as sustainable if they are associated with renewable energy sources. In 2025, the share of RES in the energy balance of the Republic of Kazakhstan amounted to 7.0 %. On this basis, KEGOC JSC calculated its sustainable income in proportion to the share of RES in the total volume of transmitted electricity: sustainable income in 2025 amounted to KZT 27.8 billion. Thus, part of KEGOC JSC’s income qualifies as “sustainable income” in accordance with the criteria of the EU taxonomy. The Company also implements digital projects (Smart Grid, WAMS, WACS, CSPA) aimed at the further integration of RES and enhancing the resilience of the energy system.

As part of its cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Company has introduced software for forecasting RES generation (ENFOR). The software expands the System Operator’s toolkit for the planning and forecasting of generation. At the NDC SO branch, the functions of the structural division ensuring systematic work on the integration of RES have been adjusted.

The consumption of electricity by the Republic of Kazakhstan for the reporting period of 2025, compared to the same period of 2024, increased by 4,611.0 million kWh (3.8 %) and amounted to 124,606.5 million kWh. In the Northern Zone, electricity consumption increased by 205.3 million kWh (0.3 %), in the Western Zone of Kazakhstan by 2,141.6 million kWh (13.2 %), and in the Southern Zone by 2,264.1 million kWh (8.0 %).
